How to Track Cases in the Calcutta High Court

The Calcutta High Court — the oldest of India's High Courts — has jurisdiction over West Bengal and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The principal seat is in Kolkata; a circuit bench operates at Port Blair. Like Bombay and Madras, the Calcutta HC has both Original Side and Appellate Side jurisdictions, with distinctive procedural rules on the Original Side.

This guide covers the Calcutta HC's case-status portals, search workflow, the Original-vs-Appellate-Side distinction that often trips up advocates new to the court, and the quirks of the Port Blair circuit bench.

Where the Calcutta High Court publishes case data

Step-by-step: tracking a case

  1. 1

    Identify the seat / bench

Kolkata (principal) for West Bengal matters; Port Blair (circuit) for A&N Islands matters. Port Blair sits only for specific weeks each year — published on the HC website calendar.

  2. 2

    Determine Original or Appellate Side

Original Side civil suits (higher pecuniary value, certain commercial matters) file under different rules. Appellate Side handles most writs, appeals, revisions. Most advocates know which side their matter sits on; if in doubt, the filing receipt indicates.

  3. 3

    Start at calcuttahighcourt.gov.in/case-status

Pick the search mode (CNR for speed, party name if you've lost the CNR).

  4. 4

    Search and confirm

Enter the CNR or case number. Verify parties and filing date.

  5. 5

    Read the case history

Chronological. Original Side matters show additional procedural entries (e.g. affidavit-of-documents, discovery orders) that Appellate Side matters don't.

  6. 6

    Download orders

PDFs available on each order entry. Older Original Side orders may require a visit to the HC registry for certified copies.

  7. 7

    Check the cause list

calcuttahighcourt.gov.in/daily-cause-list. Separate lists for Original and Appellate Sides; pick the correct one. Port Blair lists are published during the circuit-bench sitting weeks only.

  8. 8

    Automate

Add the CNR to CasePilot. Original Side procedural quirks are handled; Port Blair circuit-bench dates are pulled from the HC calendar automatically.

Quirks specific to the Calcutta High Court

  • Oldest High Court, most unique procedural rules

The Calcutta HC was established in 1862 and retains many procedural traditions that are distinct from newer HCs. The Original Side Rules, in particular, preserve features from the Letters Patent jurisdiction that no longer exist elsewhere.

  • Original Side vs Appellate Side

Unlike most HCs where writs and civil suits go to different judges but follow similar procedures, the Calcutta Original Side operates under Letters-Patent-era rules (Original Side Rules, 1914, as amended). Pleadings, discovery, and affidavits follow a distinct format. Research Letters Patent jurisprudence before drafting on the Original Side.

  • Port Blair circuit bench

The circuit bench at Port Blair sits for approximately 2-3 weeks twice a year. Matters from A&N Islands are listed at these sittings. Between sittings, Port Blair matters can be listed at Kolkata by transfer order, but this requires a motion.

  • English-only proceedings

Unlike some regional HCs, the Calcutta HC operates almost entirely in English. Cause lists, orders, and judgments are English-only. This simplifies cross-reference with other courts.

  • Summary judgment procedure on Original Side

Order XIV of the Original Side Rules permits summary judgment in certain suits (on a liquidated claim where the defendant has no real defence). This is distinct from — and pre-dates — the 2002 CPC amendment that introduced Order XIIIA in subordinate courts. Don't confuse the two regimes.

Common questions

The Calcutta High Court (along with Bombay and Madras) derives part of its Original Side jurisdiction from Letters Patent issued under pre-Independence statutes. This remains part of the court's authority post-Constitution, preserved under Article 225. It gives the Calcutta HC Original Side its distinctive procedural character (Order XIV, affidavit-of-documents, the chartered vs unchartered distinction).
Check the case number prefix: "C.S." (Civil Suit) and "C.O.P." (Company Original Proceeding) are Original Side; "F.A." (First Appeal), "W.P." (Writ Petition), "C.R." (Civil Revision) are Appellate Side. The filing counter also directs based on case type.
Yes — CasePilot polls both the main Calcutta HC portal and the Port Blair-specific cause lists during circuit-bench sittings. Between sittings, the matter shows as "not listed" which is accurate.
Most Indian HCs now allow video-conference appearances for circuit-bench matters, subject to the court's direction. File a video-conference request well in advance. The Calcutta HC's video-conferencing rules are published on the court's website.
Judgments from approximately 2015 onwards are well-indexed on the official portal. Older matters — especially from the pre-digital era — may require access to reported volumes (AIR, Indian Law Reports, Calcutta series) or a paid database.
