How to Track Cases in the Gujarat High Court
This guide is for chambers and law firms with a Gujarat High Court practice — the people who have to know, before 6 pm, whether a matter is on tomorrow's board and in whose court. Gujarat's court IT stack is one of the better ones, but well built is not easy: the useful features sit behind a captcha, a case-mode toggle and a court number that is not the court room number.
The court sits at Sola, Ahmedabad, with no circuit or regional benches — one seat, statewide jurisdiction. What follows is the working routine: which portal to live in, how each search mode behaves, the case-type codes that return somebody else's matter, how to pull orders, judgments and certified copies, and how to read a cause list that runs to hundreds of pages.
Where the Gujarat High Court publishes case data
Gujarat Case Search (High Court portal)

The court's own portal and the one to live in. Run by the High Court with NIC, it carries panels eCourts does not: case details, litigant and advocate search, judge search, orders, certified copies, caveats, early listing, cause lists, neutral citation search, the hybrid-hearing option and free-text search. Its LC-Case, LC-FIR and LC-Judge panels find the High Court matter arising from a lower-court case, FIR or judge — High Court case details, not district-court case status. Its weakness: a single-page app, so deep links are limited and the back button is unreliable.

The national fallback: case number, filing number, party name, advocate, FIR, act, case type, cause list, orders and a Neutral Citation Number order search. What it lacks is CNR — eCourts has no CNR search for any High Court, Gujarat included; that lookup exists only on the court's own portal.

Pick your case mode
Three modes: Registration, Filing and CNR Number. A numbered matter has a registration number, a merely presented one a filing number — not interchangeable.

Search by CNR
Enter the 16-character number. Gujarat High Court CNRs begin GJHC24, then a six-digit sequence and the year — GJHC240464702021. It survives re-numbering, so it is the identifier to keep in your case sheet.

Search by case number
In Registration mode pick the Case Type, then number and four-digit year. The dropdown splits into 58 civil types and 7 criminal. Watch SCA against SCR.A — Special Civil and Special Criminal Application sit in different groups. Watch CRA against CR.A harder still: CRA is a Civil Revision Application (civil), CR.A a Criminal Appeal (criminal), one dot apart. Either slip returns a valid-looking result for someone else's matter.

Search by party name
The Litigant panel takes the name, a match rule — Exactly, Anywhere, Beginning With, Ending With — and, compulsorily, a case year range; narrow by case type, status and district. Without a filing year, run several ranges.

Search by advocate
The Advocate panel takes the same year range but only three match rules — Anywhere, Beginning With, Ending With. No Exactly, so a common surname returns a long list. It adds a Pending Date To range and a status filter whose useful option is "Pending with Future Date" — matters that already have a next date.

Every search on both portals needs one; an audio alternative exists.

Read the result properly
The detail view returns Presented On and Registered On, bench, category, district, case originated from, purpose of listing, stage, classification act, office objections, the proceedings history and IA details. Office objections are what to check when a matter has not been listed and nobody can say why.

Case types you will get wrong
In Registration mode the Case Type dropdown splits into 58 civil types and 7 criminal. The pairs below look alike and sit in different groups, so a wrong pick returns a valid-looking result for someone else's matter.

The number carries a mode prefix as well as a type: R/SCA/15436/2019 is a registered number, F/LPA/43251/2019 a filing number, and the prefix tells you which toggle to set. C/ is not a third mode — it is a header artefact on downloaded judgment PDFs, and must never be typed into the search.
Downloading orders and judgments
The Orders panel takes case type, number and year and returns the order history with downloadable copies. Gujarat also runs a free-text search across orders and judgments with a download button, on the same portal as case status, not a separate judgment database.
For citation work, the court assigned neutral citations by circular dated 14 July 2023. Get the bench suffix right: 2024:GUJHC:45100 is a single judge, a Division Bench appends -DB (2022:GUJHC:884-DB), a larger bench -LB (2022:GUJHC:13113-LB). A DB judgment cited bare is a defective citation. Search at gujarathc-casestatus.nic.in/gujarathc/NCSearch.jsp.
Certified copies are a two-panel job. You apply through Certified Copy Apply: advocate name, an SMS OTP to the registered mobile, Ordinary or Urgent, then order details and a per-page fee. You collect in the EMCS Portfolio (with eCertified Copy) at gujarathc-casestatus.nic.in/gujarathc/MyPortfolio.jsp, which opens only on mobile, email and OTP. The neutral citation is printed on the eCertified copy.
The court also publishes Gujarati translations of orders and judgments at gujarathighcourt.nic.in/gujaratijudgments, over a hundred pages of listings reaching back to the 1980s. And eCourts' order search by order date and by party name covers all uploaded orders, where the portal's NCSearch Advanced Search (year, month, case type, litigant) and Free Text Search reach only judgments and final orders carrying a neutral citation. Scope, not existence, is the difference.
Cause lists
The Cause List panel has five tabs; the right one saves the most time. Court Wise takes date plus court number. Judge Wise takes date plus judge (press Enter after selecting the judge). Lawyer Wise takes date plus advocate name with Anywhere, Beginning With or Ending With — the one that needs no advocate code, so it works for a colleague's or opponent's board. Case No. Wise takes date plus registration or filing number, the fastest "is my matter listed tomorrow" check. Complete gives the whole day.
The separate eBook cause list at gujarathighcourt.nic.in/causelist needs your advocate code plus a captcha; the code comes from the Registry, and the court publishes no lookup. Its date dropdown holds roughly six dates, not necessarily consecutive court days, and it runs ahead as well as behind: checked on Saturday 29 August 2026, both Monday 31 August and Tuesday 1 September were already listed.
The complete list is one large PDF: 2 January 2025 ran to 574 pages, stamped "generated on Tue Dec 31 17:33:44 IST 2024", the evening before. It opens with a coram-wise table of contents, then a Daily Board per bench, sectioned into Fresh Matters, Notice and Adjourned Matters, For Admission, For Final Hearing, For Orders and Top of the Board. Sittings run 11:00 am to 1:45 pm and 2:30 to 5:00 pm.
Quirks specific to the Gujarat High Court
R/ and F/ prefixes are the case mode
R/SCA/15436/2019 is a registered number, F/LPA/43251/2019 a filing number; in one day's list R/ outnumbered F/ roughly fifteen to one. The prefix tells you which toggle to set — and entries routinely read "R/CA/5630/2024 IN F/MCA/31865/2024", so one row can carry both.
C/ is not a third mode
C/SCA/ numbers appear atop downloaded judgment PDFs — a header artefact: one matter reads C/SCA/12621/2021 in the running header and R/SPECIAL CIVIL APPLICATION NO. 12621 of 2021 in the cause title of the same PDF. Never type C/ into the search; the toggle has only Registration, Filing and CNR.
Court number is not the court room number
Court codes are four- and five-digit — 5140, 5164 through 5186, and others. A cause list header reads COURT NO : 5164 "E" WING - SECOND FLOOR COURT ROOM NO: 38; Court Wise wants 5164, not 38. Room numbers are not unique either: 5168 and 5184 both sit in Court Room No: 10.
Each bench's Zoom link is printed in the cause list, and changes daily
Every Daily Board header carries "Today's Zoom VC Hybrid Hearing Link" with a meeting ID and password; on the day sampled, 35 benches each had their own. There is no standing link to save: take them from that morning's header for your bench, or the bench notices. The Online Hybrid Hearing Option panel at gujarathc-casestatus.nic.in/gujarathc/HybridHearing.jsp is not a link source — it is where you elect to appear virtually (date, bench, advocate/PIP code, OTP) under the Revised SOP, Circular ITC-417-2026 of 23.02.2026, with strict-adherence circular ITC-667-2026 of 17.03.2026 on the Misc Notifications page.
The roster moves without a portal signal
The status page shows the current bench but will not tell you it changed. The signal is on gujarathighcourt.nic.in/miscnotifications: near-daily "non-availability of Hon'ble Mr Justice X" and "Single Sitting" notices, plus periodic "MODIFIED LIST OF SITTING" and court-shifting notices. A coram change surfaces there first.
Every matter carries its district of origin
Entries are tagged (AHMEDABAD), (SURAT), (RAJKOT), (VADODARA) and so on. One seat serves the whole state, so that tag separates similarly-named matters.
District case data is separate — e-filing is not
District case status and cause lists live on services.ecourts.gov.in, not the High Court portal. E-filing runs through one national portal for both, filing.ecourts.gov.in/pdedev/, where you pick the establishment inside it; the district judiciary has its own SOP, linked at gujarathighcourt.nic.in/efilingdistrict. It posts state-by-state maintenance windows — check before a deadline filing.
