Step-by-step: tracking a case

   Search by case number — the fastest route

   new.phhc.gov.in/case-status/case-no takes Case Type, Case No and Year, all mandatory, and needed no captcha when we ran it. The result carries Diary Number, Registration Date, a numbered Category, parties, both sides' advocates with bar numbers where populated (the respondent's is often blank), District, List Type, Status, Next Date, Reserved and Pronouncement dates, Final Order Uploaded On, a Judgment Details For Case table, a related-applications table with order links, and the listing history.

   Search by party name

   new.phhc.gov.in/case-status/party-name needs three characters and narrows by From/To date, Year, Case Type, Petitioner/Respondent and District.

   Before registration, search by diary number

   A new filing gets a diary number first, a case number only on registration. new.phhc.gov.in/case-status/filing-search searches By Diary No or By Party Name under a Status filter — All, Registered, Pending, Objection. Objection is how you learn a filing came back defective.

   Use the specialised routes when you have no case number

   FIR No and Complaint No reach criminal matters from the police record. Impugned Order searches by district and date of the order under challenge. LAC/LR covers land acquisition and land reference.

Case types you will get wrong

The eCourts vocabulary holds 121 case types for this court, several differing by a single character: type "CWP" and four options appear — CWP, CA-CWP, CWP-COM and CWP-PIL. Pick wrong and you get "no record found" for a case that plainly exists.

Case numbers are written TYPE-NUMBER-YEAR, as in CWP-8766-2021, and miscellaneous applications carry the parent's type inside their own, as in CM-16322-CWP-2026.

Downloading orders and judgments

Orders sit in two tables, and neither is a superset of the other. The record carries a table headed "Judgment Details For Case: [case number]" on the parent case — Order Date, Order and Case ID, Bench, Judgment Link, each row with a View Order link. Separately, "View Order Dated ..." links sit on rows of the related miscellaneous applications table: an order disposing of a stay application hangs off the CM. On the writ petition we checked, thirteen order dates appeared only against the CM and ARB rows and nine only in Judgment Details. Read both, every time.

Judgment search at new.phhc.gov.in/judgement/judgement-bycaseNo runs by case number, judge or free text. The year dropdown offers 1927 onward, but that is the form's range, not a guarantee of coverage: the court in its present form dates from 1947 (as the High Court of East Punjab) and 1966 under its current name. Treat early years as sparse.

Neutral citation. A judgment carrying one is stamped in every page footer as Neutral Citation No:=YYYY:PHHC:NNNNNN, and Division Bench judgments carry a -DB suffix — we confirmed 2023:PHHC:140632 on a single-judge CRA-S and 2025:PHHC:045232-DB on a two-judge CWP. The scheme runs from 2023 onward, so older judgments have none. Copy the string exactly as stamped, -DB included: eCourts offers a Neutral Citation Number search, so an inexact string is unlikely to match.

Certified copies are a separate route. Viewing and downloading an order is free and needs no login. A certified copy goes through the E-Copying and Inspection Portal at new.phhc.gov.in/copying/highcourt/login, which authenticates by OTP, serves decided cases only, and does not refund fees on a rejected application.

Cause lists

Cause lists live at new.phhc.gov.in/cause/daily-cause-list — a date and one of sixteen list types (Urgent, Ordinary, Takenup, Special, Lok Adalat, Commercial, Liquidation and the rest).

Check the supplementary, not just the main. Most types published on a given day appear in both a Main and a Supplementary edition, but not all: on 3 September 2026 only seven of the sixteen types were published, and Liquidation (Urgent) had a Main with no Supplementary. The search returned thirteen rows that day — rows, not guaranteed files: the Liquidation (Urgent) row 404s at both its View button and its direct path. Late listings land in the supplementary, so check it separately.

On timing, read the file rather than assume. Each PDF carries its own creation-date property. For 3 September 2026 the ordinary and special mains were created on 31 August, while the urgent and takenup mains and the supplementaries were stamped the previous evening (urgent main 18:13, ordinary supplementary 18:01). Treat those as illustrations, not a schedule.

The neighbouring tabs, in the portal's own labels: Judge wise causelist, Judge wise Regular causelist, Daily cause list, Mediation cause list, Summary case listed and District Wise Cause list, the last filtering by date, district, list type, category (All/Civil/Criminal) and case type.

The PDFs are also reachable directly — the urgent main list for 3 September 2026 at new.phhc.gov.in/pdfs/cl/2026_09_03_u_m.pdf — but that is not how the site fetches them (it mints a token and serves /pdf/view/ plus a uuid), and the filename letters are undocumented and unreliable: one published type 404s at both its direct path and its own View button, while a takenup list exists as a PDF for a date whose search shows no takenup row. Run the form and follow the View link instead. Columns are Diary Number, Filing Date, e-Filing No, Case Type, Petitioner, Respondent and Advocate, with miscellaneous applications grouped under their parent as "CM IN CWP-...".

Quirks specific to the Punjab and Haryana High Court

• One bench, three jurisdictions — the District field tells them apart

  eCourts lists a single bench (code 22, bench 1, "Principal Bench Punjab") and labels the court "High Court of Punjab"; Haryana and Chandigarh are not separate selections. CWP-8766-2021 shows District = UT-CHANDIGARH — there is no plain "CHANDIGARH" entry, so anyone scrolling to C gives up.

• The district list is a national master with its own spellings

  All 487 entries, with PUNJAB STATE and HARYANA STATE pinned at the top where the State itself is the origin. Type to filter, and use its spellings — GURGAON (not Gurugram), HISSAR, SONEPAT, MOHALI (SAS NAGAR), MEWAT (NUH). HOSHIARPUR appears twice, and there are OTHER-DISTRICT and UNKNOWN-DISTRICT catch-alls.

• Roster movement is the norm, and visible

  The Case Listing Details table shows every past listing — date, list type and serial number ("ORDINARY:224"), presiding judge and court room. The writ petition we examined had been listed before eight different judges when we checked, so consult the Sitting Roster, searchable by date, rather than assuming the last judge takes the next hearing. Hybrid and video-conference sittings are announced on the portal banner.

• Mentioning and future listings are online

  Online Mentioning saves a trip, and Future Listing Cases shows To be Listed and AG Office cases before they reach a cause list. There is a Caveat Search too, and official apps.
